Lionel Messi’s new shirt numbers appears to have leaked with the attacker set to wear the No 30 jersey at PSG and Neymar to keep hold of the coveted 10 shirt, per reports. Over the past decade, the Argentine had sported the famous No 10 shirt for both Argentina and Barcelona, but his rumoured choice this time around indicates the start of a new era in France, as well as a nod to a previous one.

Paying homage to his early days at Barcelona, the No 30 jersey was what he wore in his first two seasons as a teenager at the Nou Camp.

In his third season, he gave it up to wear the No 19 shirt, although this is currently occupied at PSG by Pablo Sarabia.

Of course, the Barca icon is most famous for his exploits while wearing No 10, both for the Catalan side and for Argentina, following in the footsteps of Diego Maradona.

However, that is currently occupied by Neymar at the Parc des Princes, the tricky winger who forged a strong friendship with Messi during their four seasons together at Barcelona.

Seemingly not keen to tread on anyone’s toes, No 30 became the sentimental, albeit slightly unorthodox choice, which according to French journalist Saber Desfarges is one the Argentine has already made.

According to Marca, Neymar had even offered to relinquish his No 10 jersey for the incoming legend, although Messi rejected the gesture.

The move to PSG will certainly mark a new chapter in the 34-year-old’s glittering career, although it was not a move made by choice alone.

With Barcelona, the club he has spent his entire professional career with, squirming under the weight of La Liga’s financial regulations, they were unable to renew his deal.

High earners simply had to be moved on from the Camp Nou this summer in order to make room for Messi’s wages, and with stars like Antoine Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho seemingly going nowhere, Barca were backed into a corner.

Messi’s tearful farewell press conference perfectly represented the fact that this was not how his Catalan fairytale was meant to end, but it had to be done for the good of the club.

After his departure became clear, the Copa America winner reportedly turned towards compatriot Mauricio Pochettino, in favour of a move to PSG.

There, he will reunite with Neymar, as well as international team-mates Leandro Paredes and Angel Di Maria.

In many ways, the football world has been saddened to watch arguably the greatest player of all time forced out of the club he loves so dearly.

PSG are a club going places, however, and with a wealth of top-tier talent in their ranks for the coming season, Messi could be the cherry on top of a silverware-winning machine.

Just like a bad break-up, Messi’s head will still be in Barcelona for some time.

His rumoured shirt number choice is indicative of that, a nod to his early days in Barcelona before he became their greatest player of all time.
