Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo impact still felt by Barcelona and Juventus

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's respective impact is still being felt at Barcelona and Juventus – despite both having left in the summer.

Messi departed his beloved Catalan club after being unable to re-sign due to their financial issues, while Ronaldo wanted out of Italy with a year left on his contract.

The pair of footballing greats are now fully focused on their new ventures at Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United.

However, with La Liga and Serie A both having finished their 2021 schedule, and Barca and Juve now on a winter break, Messi and Ronaldo have miraculously finished as their top scorers for the year.

The Argentina international scored 28 goals before his contract expired in the summer.

A large overhaul of players in the transfer window meant that no one else was near that tally by the end of Barca's final game of 2021, a 1-1 draw with Sevilla on Tuesday.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, managed to net 20 times after the turn of the year for his former side.

Although that figure is lower, it still could not be beat by any of the Old Lady's stars.

Can anyone replace Messi and Ronaldo's goals? Let us know in the comments section.

Barca, who have endured a tough 12 months, scored a total of 108 goals, with Messi bagging more than a quarter of them.

He was followed in the list of top scorers by Antoine Griezmann, who found the back of the net on 15 occasions before also leaving to join Atletico Madrid on loan.

Summer signing Memphis Depay has racked up eight finishes since arriving from Lyon, but replacing the goals of Messi was always going to be a tricky, if not impossible, task.

Juve have also struggled to cope with the loss of their star man.

In fact, they are only 11th for the most goals scored out of the 20 teams in their league.

They still have the attacking threat of Alvara Morata, Federico Chiesa and Paul Dybala.

But that trio have managed to score just 17, 15 and 11 goals respectively in 2021.

The remarkable stat is yet another in a long line that show why Messi and Ronaldo are two of the best to ever grace the beautiful game.
