Leeds suffer major injury blow as Rodrigo is set to miss two months

Leeds United suffer huge injury blow in their battle to avoid the drop as top scorer Rodrigo faces TWO MONTHS on the sidelines, after undergoing surgery on his ankle following their FA Cup win over Accrington Stanley

  • The forward is set to miss two months during a crucial time of the season
  • Rodrigo is the fifth best scorer in the Premier League with ten goals this season

Leeds United have suffered a major blow as top scorer Rodrigo is facing two months on the sidelines after undergoing surgery.

The club confirmed the news in a message on social media, after the Brazilian-born Spanish international suffered an ankle injury in their 3-1 FA Cup victory over Accrington Stanley.

Rodrigo sustained the injury in a challenge during the match, and suffered ligament and bone damage to his ankle which required minor surgery.

The 31-year-old could miss up to eight Premier League matches if the injury keeps him out until the beginning of April.

It is a massive blow for Leeds and manager Jesse Marsch, with Rodrigo their top scorer this season with ten goals.

Jesse Marsch will have to contend without his top scorer for the next two months

Only four other players across the Premier League have netted more times this season (Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, Ivan Toney and Aleksandar Mitrovic).

The next best top scorer this season is Crysencio Summerville with four, though no other player in the team has scored more than two league goals.

Leeds did however bring in a forward during the January transfer window, with Georginio Rutter joining for a club record £36m fee.

Marsch will hope Rutter hits the ground quickly, with the club currently 15th in the Premier League – one point above the relegation zone.

During the period Rodrigo is out, he will miss a number of important games against fellow relegation contenders.

That starts with Sunday’s trip to Nottingham Forest, and they also play Everton, Southampton and Wolves.

Rodrigo was named on the bench for the clash at the Wham Stadium with Accrington Stanley.

However he came on as a 69th minute substitute and made it to the end of the game, and it’s unclear when the injury was picked up during the match.
