League One club use Love Island theme for transfer and fans not impressed

Charlton Athletic left fans feeling unimpressed after using a Love Island theme for a new player's transfer announcement.

The League One club unveiled the signing of Mandela Egbo in astonishing fashion on Tuesday. The Addicks media team went above and beyond, tapping into their creative juices to announce the defender's arrival with a Love Island-inspired video.

In a clip uploaded to the club's Twitter account, Egbo is seen performing in a skit where he announces he's received a text message, as is customary on the hit TV show. In true Love Island style, the 24-year-old then reads out the message from Charlton manager Ben Garner aloud.

The message reads: "Need a right-back. Fancy it? #DoneDeal #RightBackInBusiness," which Egbo replies to by saying: "Why not?!" as the show's iconic theme tune plays in the background.

Despite the stunning creativity and arguably solid acting performance by Egbo, the video has split fan opinion online.

One baffled Twitter user wrote in reply: "What are these antics man?" while another commented: "This is very very tragic."

A third brutally added: "I was looking forward to Love Island tonight, can't imagine watching it after seeing this monstrosity."

Yet there were many who appreciated the humour, responding with laughing face emojis in the comments and even calling the video "class".

One supporter wrote: "Fair play actually a decent announcement video." Another added: "This is so funny."
