Kylian Mbappe showcased his leadership qualities by rallying his France team-mates with a passionate, X-rated rant as they trailed Argentina 2-0 at the break in the World Cup final. The Golden Boot winner in Qatar was left infuriated by his side’s lacklustre opening 45 minutes that seriously diminished their hopes of defending their trophy.
Lionel Messi put Argentina ahead from the spot before Angel Di Maria added a second after finishing off a slick team move.
France looked dead on their feet and short of ideas until Mbappe took the chance to inspire them in the dressing room at the interval with a war cry that evidently struck a chord.
He is pictured on video shouting: “We can’t do worse. We come back on the pitch, we must pull it off. We conceded 2 goals, we can come back. F*** guys, this is once every 4 years, f***!”
Didier Deschamps looks anxious as he steps around the dressing room waiting for Mbappe to finish his lines.
The 24-year-old was able to put his money where his mouth is, stepping up and delivering a stunning second-half performance for Les Bleus.
He dispatched his penalty to pull the score back to 2-1 before thumping home on the volley just moments later to draw France level from nowhere.
Still, even after PSG team-mate Messi put Argentina back in front in extra-time, Mbappe would again hit back to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot.
The Frenchman was also on hand to dispatch France’s first penalty of the shootout too – meaning he scored four times past Emiliano Martinez – before Argentina eventually went on to lift the trophy.
Mbappe has now reported for training with PSG just a matter of days after the final following his return to France, seemingly refusing to take some time off.
He has been on the receiving end of vicious taunting during Argentina’s World Cup celebrations, something he may want to have escaped by returning to the pitch.
Argentina goalkeeper Martinez called a “minute’s silence for Mbappe” in the changing room after he was the hero during the shootout.
The Aston Villa shot-stopper has also continued to mock Mbappe during Argentina’s celebrations back on home soil.
He was pictured holding up a baby with Mbappe’s face on during the trophy parade, taunting the France frontman.
Messi was also caught on video laughing at a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle toy that was hurled onto the team bus.
In France, Mbappe is renowned for looking like Michelangelo, who features in the cartoon.
It could make for a frosty second half of the season at PSG where Mbappe and Messi will be reunited in due course.
