Chelsea transfer target Jules Kounde “doesn’t look like” a defender and plays opposite to what Thomas Tuchel will want, reckons legendary Liverpool full-back Steve Nicol. Chelsea are reportedly in advanced talks to sign France international Kounde from Sevilla. The 22-year-old could become the Blues’ first signing of the summer window.
If the deal goes through, Kounde would arrive at Chelsea with two solid seasons at Sevilla behind him.
He has played the majority of his football at centre-back but can also play at right-back.
Sevilla are reported to want up to £60million for Kounde’s signature, so that price tag would likely mean he becomes a regular almost immediately at Stamford Bridge.
But Nicol does not think Kounde resembles the type of defender Tuchel wants in his side and believes that could be a concern.

“He doesn’t look like a centre-back this guy,” Nicol told ESPN FC.
“When you see him with the ball at his feet, coming out, he looks like a midfield player.
“I think it might be [a concern]. It seems to me the way Tuchel has set up his Chelsea side it’s rock solid, it’s disciplined, ‘this is your job, if there’s an opportunity in a game that arises then take it’.
“But I don’t think Tuchel wants somebody trying to walk out the back and dribble past people, which the guy can do.”

Spanish football expert Sid Lowe says Sevilla are more than happy to sell Kounde if they receive an acceptable fee for him.
“Well this is, in truth, this is the deal,” Lowe told ESPN FC.
“Not necessarily Chelsea, it really doesn’t matter if it’s Chelsea or not, it could have been United, Liverpool, it could be whoever.
“This is the deal that Sevilla knew was coming, hoped would come.
“They turned down a big offer for Kounde last year, in part because they felt that they could wait a season in the hope he would continue to perform and his value would go up. And of course Sevilla have made a virtue of sales.
“They’re one of the few clubs who have totally taken the drama out of losing their best players because they have a system and model that works. It not only works, but demands that they sell their best players.
“It’s important for Kounde to go, it was important anyway because of their model, but off the back of the pandemic it’s even more important.
“So this is something Sevilla want to happen at the right price, it’s something they’re actively working towards, and if they can get somewhere close to €70m then yes, this will happen.”
