Jose Enrique tells Jurgen Klopp not to complete £35m signing for Liverpool

Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has urged Jurgen Klopp to avoid signing RB Leipzig centre-back Ibrahima Konate this summer.

Liverpool were rocked by long-term injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip this season but ended up securing third spot in the Premier League on the final day of the campaign.

According to reports in Germany on Monday, Liverpool are on the brink of completing a €40 million [£35m] deal for Konate as they are keen to recruit a new central defender in the upcoming transfer window.

But Enrqiue believes Nat Phillips has shown enough to warrant a permanent place in Klopp’s squad.

In his response to an Instagram post which reported the news of Liverpool’s bid to sign Konate and their decision to not press ahead with a permanent deal for Ozan Kabak, Jose Enrique wrote: ‘For me we should not buy either of them and keep Phillips as a fourth option.

‘If we are going to sell Matip then [it] is fair but if not I don’t understand. We need [to strengthen] other positions.’

Meanwhile, Klopp admits he is unsure whether Liverpool have the finances to bolster his squad this summer.

‘So, whatever we do or not do in the next transfer window, for sure we will not use it as any kind of excuse,’ the Liverpool manager said last week

‘We did what we did in the past with the way we did it; when there was money we spent it, when there was no money we didn’t spend it, and here we are. That’s how it is.

‘Yes, I’m very happy with my squad – very, very happy. Could this squad improve? Yes, like each squad could. Is that affordable? I don’t know. Is it necessary? I don’t know.

‘Whatever happens, we will see, I don’t know in this moment, to be honest.

‘We have to make decisions in and out, all these kind of things, it’s normal in a summer.’
