Newcastle United star Joelinton had to be carried off on a stretcher just minutes into their game with Burnley.
The Magpies' clash with the relegation-threatened Clarets at Turf Moor had not long got underway when the Brazilian rose up for a header and landed awkwardly. Medical staff rushed to his aid and it appeared as though he had sustained a nasty cut on his shin.
After several minutes of treatment, he was stretchered off on 11 minutes with Eddie Howe forced to make an early change and bring Jacob Murphy on in his place. The travelling Newcastle fans chanted his name while he held his hands over his face.
Burnley's home support also applauded him off the pitch in what was a disappointing end to an impressive season for the 25-year-old. Having signed from Hoffenheim for a mega £40million fee in 2019, he had failed to live up to expectations in his first two seasons with the club.
But a transition from striker to midfielder has totally transformed his spell on Tyneside. His performances have helped Newcastle avoid the drop and earned plaudits from fans and pundits alike.
Where will Newcastle finish next season? Let us know in the comments section.
In fact, Joelinton was awarded the club's player of the season prize earlier this week. He said afterwards: “I'm delighted and very happy to win this award. Thank you to the fans, the players and the staff for helping me, and all my family and friends. Thank you.
“It has been a great season for me. Many things have happened, but I'm very happy to help the team and help the team stay in the Premier League. Hopefully next season will be even better.”
Understandably, the Toon Army were gutted to see their star man finish his campaign with an injury. One wrote: "Sad to see Joelinton's season end like that. Been a colossal part of everything we've done well this year."
Another joked: "We have to batter these lot 10-0 now nobody injures joelinton and gets away with it." A third added: "Whoever injured Joelinton I will find you."
