When Roy Keane and Jamie Carragher launched into a heated argument after Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea last month, there was one person caught in the crossfire.

As a former Chelsea striker, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was in the Sky Sports studio to provide an expert opinion on the Premier League game

Yet, while he did get a chance to offer his take on the match, which sawJadon Sancho’s goal on the break cancelled out by Jorginho’s penalty, he also had to play a different role.

That is because Hasselbaink was stationed in between Keane and Carragher, who were extremely keen to get their own points across.

The debate focused on Cristiano Ronaldo and the need for the United forward to press after he started the game on the bench – and it’s fair to say things got pretty fiery.

You can read the entirety of the back and forth here, but suffice to say that neither party backed down.

Watching the box-office debate many fans were drawn to Hasselbaink, who sat silently in between his colleagues, taking it all in with a big grin on his face.

The Dutchman soon went viral, becoming a meme on Twitter, where fans laughed at the contrast between the pundits.

So, do Sky Sports place Hasselbaink in between Keane and Carragher to keep them separate?

“I don’t know,” he told Star Sport at a Signathon Live event.

“It was not set up, the argument! I was like a tennis umpire! It was very funny.”

Hasselbaink had the best seat in the house for the debate, which stretched on for a full four minutes, but was he aware of the reaction online?

“Yeah, everybody started calling me and stuff,” he said.

“It was just one of those things. They were really passionate. It was funny. And it was really good to see.

“I have to say that I more agree with Keane, because you don’t have to press all the time and if you have Ronaldo then he needs to play, otherwise where are you going to score goals from?

“It was funny and it was really nice to be in the middle of that.”

United’s interim manager Ralf Rangnick clearly agrees with Keane and Hasselbaink’s opinion of Ronaldo, because he has not remained on the bench under the German’s management.

The 36-year-old has started all three of United’s Premier League games since the 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge, scoring the winners against Arsenal and Norwich.
