Jamie Redknapp names perfect replacement for Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Jamie Redknapp believes Manchester United should replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with Antonio Conte and has responded to the ‘uncomfortable’ criticism of superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Solskjaer is under huge pressure at Old Trafford but has been given more time despite the club’s humiliating 5-0 defeat to Liverpool last weekend.

The Red Devils travel to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday and face local rivals Manchester City next weekend, and the next few games could prove crucial if Solskjaer is going to win back the fans and save his job.

But Redknapp says he has ‘never been sold’ on Solskjaer, who replaced Jose Mourinho in the Old Trafford hot-seat in December 2018, and believes Manchester United should move on from the Norwegian boss and bring in Conte.

Conte won the Premier League title and FA Cup at United’s domestic rivals Chelsea and guided Inter Milan to the Serie A title last season, having won three Italian titles with Juventus earlier in his career.

‘Who do you get in? I think Antonio Conte would be a great fit because one or two of them need a kick up the backside,’ Redknapp told Sky Sports.

‘They need to know when they’re not doing well and that’s not the case right now. He’s going to sometimes upset players, make sure they’re on their toes… I’m not sure Ole has that personality.

‘If you lose 5-0 at home, there isn’t a manager in the world who wouldn’t come under massive pressure.

‘I can’t say I’ve ever been sold on Solskjaer as the United manager if I’m brutally honest. He’s done an OK job but we’re talking about Man Utd.

‘You want the best person in charge of your club and I don’t think Ole is that man. I’ve got a load of respect for him but you want the best.

‘United want to win titles but players have to respect the manager, and when you look at who he’s up against and how he got the job in the first place… you have to have the best and I don’t believe he’s the right man to take this club forward.’

Redknapp has also criticised the ‘uncomfortable’ criticism of all-time great Ronaldo, who has scored six goals in nine appearances since returning to Manchester United over the summer.

While Ronaldo has popped up with crucial goals for Solskjaer’s side and brought the standards up at Old Trafford, some pundits have criticised his work-rate and suggested he has hindered the team.

Former England midfielder Redknapp added: ‘I found it really interesting last weekend when, for some reason, people decided to turn on him a bit and say he’s not working hard and stuff like that.

‘Where would they be without him this season and his goals? They’d be in a huge mess so he’s the least of their worries. He will give his all and do everything he can because he’s a winner.

‘He won’t be happy with this but I found some of the criticism a little bit uncomfortable because he’s the least of their problems.’
