Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane have blasted Arsenal technical director Edu over his transfer policy if signing “rejects” from Chelsea.
The Gunners signed David Luiz and Willian from the Blues in successive seasons, but neither move has worked out as had been hoped.
Defender Luiz was released at the end of last season after falling out of favour under Mikel Arteta, while his compatriot Willian endured a disastrous debut campaign at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners are now attempting to find a buyer for the Brazilian winger, but with club finances having been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, his high wages are proving to be an obstacle.
Arsenal have ‘concerns’ from background checks on Houssem Aouar – but may still sign him
Edu has spent £275million in his three summer windows at the club, but Arsenal are further away than ever from challenging for the Premier League title or even the top four.
That poor business has now seen Carragher blast the Brazilian for his approach to the transfer window.
“When you’re talking about Edu as sporting director, you’re bringing David Luiz in and you’re bringing Willian in – two rejects from Chelsea,” he told Sky Sports’ The Overlap fan debate.
“I’m just scratching my head thinking, ‘I can’t get behind this, it’s wrong, it doesn’t work’. Of course, you’re allowed to make mistakes, but make the right mistakes.
How would you rate Arsenal's summer transfer window so far? Comment below.
“Why are you buying rejects from Chelsea who are over 30? And then giving them big deals and you can’t get rid of them? That’s a mistake before it’s happened. That’s just stupid.”
Famous Arsenal fan Ty, who appears on AFTV, attempted to argue that Carragher was wrong, which the Liverpool legend laughed off.
“It is stupid! David Luiz has just gone for nothing, Willian will go for nothing,” he said.
“They took a load of dough out of your club and you’re left with nothing. I wouldn’t have bought Willian! And I wouldn’t have bought Luiz!
“They are Chelsea rejects aren’t they, they got the best out of them and then went ‘Arsenal will have them’.”
Keane was also critical of Edu’s attempts to build a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League.
“It goes down to your recruitment – can you get the right players? Arsenal are probably still looking to get one or two players in,” he said.
“But the biggest problem for Arsenal is shifting players out. There’s players at Arsenal on huge money and they can’t get rid them.

“So then they’re stuck in terms of trying to bring players in. Recruitment is key. We’re not writing Arsenal off, they won the FA Cup two years ago.
“But we’re talking about winning league titles and Arsenal are way off it just because they haven’t got the players, they haven’t got the strength in depth.”
