‘I’d turn up to Man Utd training in a suit – Rooney wore shorts and flip flops’

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has hit out at Wayne Rooney's awful fashion sense as he used turning up for training in "shorts and flip flops".

Signed for a cool £30.75million by legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, the Bulgarian spent four glittering seasons on the banks of the river Irwell, claiming two Premier League titles, the League Cup and the Club World Cup whilst also rattling home 56 goals in 149 appearances.

Only denied a Champions League winners medal by Pep Guardiola's flawless Barcelona side, Berbatov claimed the Golden Boot for bagging 20 top-flight goals across the 2010/11 campaign before the emergence of Danny Welbeck and new signing Javier Hernandez saw him depart for Fulham in the summer of 2012.

Known for his nonchalant on-field ability, the former Premier League ace was also well-regarded for carrying the chic nature into his off-field practices, turning up for Man Utd training in a full tuxedo.

"When I was going to the training session, I was dressing myself as if I was going to my prom," the stylish Bulgarian told BT Sport's What I Wore. "With the jeans, with the shirt, with the shoes.

"Everyone was watching me, probably laughing at me because, for example, Rooney was coming with the flip flops into training and the shorts. And here is me next to him with my shirt and blazer. This transitioned onto the pitch where I wanted to look good with the shirts."

Not just a stylistic snob in terms of teammates pre-training attire, Berbatov also admitted he didn't rate the kit at previous club Tottenham.

“Ugly shirts," he added when holding aloft a Spurs home shirt from the 2006/07 season.

"I was saying this to everybody when I was playing at [all] my teams, 'Who is designing this shirt?! Who is designing our suits? I don’t like them. Put me in charge!'"
