Houssem Aouar to Arsenal: Lyon ace’s head already ‘in London’ with deal nearing completion

Arsenal transfer target Houssem Aouar’s head is already “in London”, according to beIN SPORTS presenter and commentator Hafid Derradji. Lyon star Aouar is Mikel Arteta’s top transfer target before the close of the summer transfer window. The Gunners have already seen at least one bid turned down for the 22-year-old former France under-21 star.

Arsenal are reportedly set to return with an improved offer for Aouar this week worth up to £45million [€50m] including add-ons.

Last week it was reported that Arsenal had agreed personal terms with the midfielder.

And now Derradji claims a deal is edging closer between the Gunners and Lyon, with Aouar thinking he is moving to London.

Derradji tweeted: “Houssem Aouar is London in the head, a little effort from both clubs and the transfer will materialize.”

Aouar is not the only midfielder Arsenal are linked with heading into the final week of the window.

Atletico Madrid star Thomas Partey has been on the club’s radar throughout the summer.

However, Arsenal have not been prepared to pay the Ghanaian’s £45m release clause.

Chelsea star Jorginho is also eyed by Arteta as a potential alternative to Partey and Aouar.

Former Arsenal left-back Nigel Winterburn is pleased to see his old club linked with players of that ilk.

But Winterburn reckons the need for Partey is more than for the creative Aouar.

He told FreeSuperTips: “[Partey] takes the ball in tight situations and has the power and the ability to go past the opposing midfield players.

“Once you start to eliminate in this way, as Partey does, you tend to open space in and around the opposition’s defence.

“With Arsenal’s pace up front, they can take advantage of this and cause some damage.

“Mikel Arteta is not totally happy with the midfield that he currently has and looks like he wants to change it up.

“As always with Arsenal it takes a long time to get things done. We’re just going to have to again wait and see, but I don’t believe that Arsenal have the money to bring them both in.

“Also, when discussing ideal signings, we forget to consider whether those players want to join Arsenal, and that’s the most important thing.

“So, we’ve got to wait and see, but my preference of the two would be Thomas Partey.”
