Gary Neville believes something behind-the-scenes at Tottenham has prompted Harry Kane to miss training for a second successive day. The 28-year-old was reportedly due back at Hotspur Way on Monday but has failed to check in for pre-season amid uncertainty over his future.

According to reports, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is holding out for £150million plus for his star striker in order to stave off clubs, but primary suitors Manchester City are only willing to bid as high as £120m.

Levy’s reluctance to let Kane pursue silverware elsewhere has seemingly caused a rift in their relationship, leading to the England captain’s failure to report for COVID-19 tests and blood work on Monday.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville suggested Kane must be ‘seriously annoyed’ with something that’s happened for him to take such drastic measures.

He said: “If he was meant to come back on Monday, he should’ve come back. You can never advocate any player not turning up for training, simple as that.

“You’ve got to turn up and do your job. However, I’ve worked with Harry Kane [and] I can’t think of a more professional football player that I’ve ever seen.

“He does everything right, so he must be seriously annoyed. Something has happened badly that’s made him do that.”

Despite his frustration, the ex-Manchester United defender has advised Kane to return to Hotspur Way, no matter how he feels treated by the club.

“You have to turn up. You have to respect your teammates. Your teammates in the dressing room, they are all there doing pre-season,” Neville added.

“So I always think that Harry has got to get back in quickly and get back with those lads running around the pitch.

“As much as he wants to leave, as much as he thinks that he might have been hard done to, as much as he is annoyed with the guy who is making the decisions, he has got to get back in with his teammates because they are professional players as well.”

With under two weeks to go until the 2021/22 season starts, new Spurs head coach Nuno Espirito Santo will be concerned over his star man’s absence.

Kane seems desperate to set sail on a new challenge at the Etihad Stadium, but Levy’s reluctance to lose him so close to the season is understandable.

With three years left on his current contract, Spurs will be under no pressure to sell Kane.

However, if the star striker takes his protest up a notch, more issues may arise in Nuno’s debut season in charge.
