Ilkay Gundogan's wife has admitted that she cannot stand the Italian restaurants in Manchester – and stats have revealed where in the United Kingdom she might prefer to live.
The Germany international has spent the last six years with Manchester City after joining from Borussia Dortmund. During his time, he has become a trusted lieutenant under Pep Guardiola, who has even made him captain on many occasions.
However, Gundogan's wife Sara – who is Italian – has slammed the local grub and insisted that Manchester has "horrible food". Asked to name her favourite restaurant in Manchester, she replied: "Sorry, I’m sad to be honest but nothing.

"I tried so bad to find a good restaurant but horrible food everywhere. Can’t find a real Italian or good sushi or just fresh food… everywhere frozen."
So, where would Mrs Gundogan prefer in the country? According to Pretzel Group, they have pinpointed the ideal location for Italian food – Cardiff.
After scouring Trip Advisor for the best restaurants, it was discovered that 22.62 per cent of Italian diners in Cardiff are rated five stars. Compared to Manchester, only 14.06 per cent of their Italian restaurants have the same rating.

In fact, the Welsh capital is among the best cities in Europe when it comes to food from Italy – with the likes of Monaco and Lisbon also scoring highly. If Gundogan wants to keep his wife happy, though, a move to Bayern Munich has surely be ruled out.
The German city has a mere 11.02 per cent of Italian restaurants that have a five-star rating – just 70 out of 635 food joints. Meanwhile, food critic Jay Rayner attacked Sara's opinion and replied: "This is a ludicrous point of view. Manchester’s packed full of brilliant, independent restaurants."
