Guardiola ‘warned’ Barcelona about transfer flop that’s left Koeman red-faced

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola reportedly warned Barcelona that Eric Garcia was not ready to play first-team football on a regular basis before he moved to Catalonia.

Garcia joined Barca on a free transfer from Man City over the summer after waiting a year to see his dream move become a reality.

Barcelona had been keen to sign the Spanish centre-back in October 2020, but City rejected a £15.4million bid because they wanted closer to £20m for him, according toSky Sports.

Garcia then rejected the offer of a new deal with City to force through his move back to Barcelona, where he previously graduated from the famed La Masia academy.

The 20-year-old signed a contract until June 2026 with Barcelona, who showed their commitment to the defender by placing a whopping buy-out clause of £344m (€400m) in his contract.

The confidence Barca placed in Garcia now appears like it may have been misplaced following a disastrous start to the season.

Garcia has only played six matches for his new side this season, yet he has already been sent off twice to leave Ronald Koeman with a major headache.

The youngster was sent off in his second La Liga match against Athletic Bilbao in August and doubled up the red cards by being dismissed in their 3-0 defeat by Benfica on Wednesday.

Garcia is clearly finding the step from being a back-up player at Man City to being a regular in a struggling Barcelona side difficult.

That is hardly surprising given he made just 12 appearances in all competitions and started just three games in the Premier League last season.

Barcelona’s mistake has been highlighted by a report fromEl Nacional, which says Guardiola warned his former club that Garcia was not ready for regular first-team action.

The report states Guardiola made a ‘sincere’ comment to Barca and ‘warned’ them that the defender had ‘little experience’ of playing on the biggest stages.

Garcia’s shaky start is just one of the things on Koeman’s plate currently, with reports in Spain suggesting that the former Southampton and Everton boss is on borrowed time.

Barcelona have lost both of their Champions League games 3-0 this season and sit sixth in La Liga, five points off leaders Real Madrid.

Koeman will be in charge for Saturday’s tricky trip to face Atletico Madrid, but the club are understood to be reaching out to potential successors behind the scenes.
