Graeme Souness has singled out Mason Greenwood for special praise for his display in Manchester United’s 5-1 victory over Leeds United on Saturday.
Bruno Fernandes stole the headlines by scoring his first-ever hat-trick for United, while Paul Pogba provided a record-breaking four assists in his side’s Premier League opener.
Greenwood, meanwhile, spearheaded United’s attack and capped an excellent performance with a fine goal in the second half as he raced on to Pogba’s brilliant through ball and smashed his effort low past Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
But despite two excellent displays from Fernandes and Pogba, Souness believes Greenwood’s ‘sensational’ performance was the highlight for United.
Asked how many Premier League title challengers there will be this season, Souness told Sky Sports: ‘Four, I think we have to include United in that.
‘Looking at them yesterday they looked threatening, positive, they’ve got a bit of momentum, the crowd seemed to be with them, they’ve signed good players.
‘For me yesterday the star of the show was Greenwood. For a young boy, I thought he was sensational.’
When he was reminded by Micah Richards that Pogba provided four assists, Souness replied: ‘We expect that from a £100m man.
‘I was going to get around to the point that they spent £70m on Sancho, maybe that might be something they look back on and think, ‘do we need to spend that money?’.
‘Because that boy [Greenwood] is a player, he’s a finisher, I think he’s going to be a top player.
‘You’ve got to include Chelsea, obviously Manchester City and my old team [Liverpool], I think it will be nip and tuck.’
