Graeme Souness has tipped Chelsea to launch a shock transfer move for Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea.
Frank Lampard is known to be frustrated by Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation at Stamford Bridge, with 38-year-old Willy Caballero currently starting ahead of £72m club-record signing Kepa Arrizabalaga.
De Gea has been a mainstay in Manchester United’s team for almost a decade but he has ensured a frustrating season and made another mistake in the 1-1 draw with Everton on Sunday.
Speaking after the Premier League clash, Souness suggested De Gea could leave Old Trafford this summer and said Chelsea may look to sign the Spaniard.
‘I remember he made a mistake against Liverpool earlier in the season and his manager wasn’t kind to him but he appears to have learnt from that. He appears to have a big personality.
‘De Gea I would imagine would be one of the best-paid players at United. Could you have him sitting on the bench on whatever he’s earning and not causing problems?
‘Would there be takers for him? You look at the situation at Chelsea and they might make a nibble for him.
‘It’s a big decision for Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] to make and that’s what he’s paid for. It’s a big, big call.’
Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Everton sees them move to within three points of fourth-placed Chelsea in the Premier League table.
