Aston Villa hero Gabriel Agbonlahor has set out Steven Gerrard’s first target as the club’s new manager. Gerrard is set to sign a two-and-a-half-year contract to become the next Villa boss following the sacking of Dean Smith last Sunday. The Liverpool great will leave Rangers after over three years in charge at Ibrox.

Gerrard is set to take over with Villa languishing in 16th place in the Premier League table.

Villa have not finished in the top-half of the English top flight for over a decade.

Agbonlahor believes that must be the first aim for Gerrard this season.

The pundit says the club must then push on towards European qualification the following campaign.

“I think he just needs to go in there, get these players playing, get the new signings firing, and just try and finish the season in the top 10,” Agbonlahor said on talkSPORT.

“I think Aston Villa fans would take top 10 at the moment, and then next season push on agan.

“Maybe he’ll be able to bring in a couple of players, maybe change a couple of players, probably get rid of a few players, and start looking to get Villa into that top six. That’s what the owners want.

“They’re bringing Gerrard in, that will be the plan over the next two or three years. Challenging to get into European places.”

Sky Sports claims Gerrard will be appointed Villa’s new boss imminently.

Agbonlahor believes the 41-year-old will gain immediate respect from the dressing room at Villa Park.

He added: “I wish I was there to see his first day, Steven Gerrard. Get everyone in the players’ lounge at the training ground and I’d love to hear his speech.

“I’ve been in that players’ lounge before and certain managers have come in and you’re like: ‘I’m not having him’.

“You can win and lose players from that first sentence you say to the players, the first meeting.

“I’m sure Steven Gerrard will just be like ‘joke’s over now, let’s start winning games, we’re going to do it my way’.

“And the players are going to look at him and think ‘that’s Steven Gerrard’.

“His presence alone before he speaks. Everybody in that changing room is going to have known of Steven Gerrard as a player.”
