Frank Lampard could face an FA charge after he was asked to explain comments about referee Stuart Attwell following the Merseyside derby.

Everton were incensed about Attwell’s decision not to award a penalty in the 53rd minute when Anthony Gordon went down following a collision with Liverpool defender Joel Matip.

They contacted the referees’ body PGMOL to ask for clarification as to why VAR Darren England did not look at the incident in more detail.

The club have complained to the Professional Game Match Officials Board over Stuart Attwell

Everton’s relationship with PGMOL is fractious and they have not forgotten how they were denied a spot-kick against Manchester City in February when Rodri handled inside the area.

Lampard was seething as he left Anfield on Sunday and said during his press conference that ‘if it is Mo Salah at the other end, you get a penalty. I have played in teams in the top half of the league, you get them’.

Those comments have been noted by the FA’s disciplinary committee and Lampard, whose side have dropped into the relegation zone, has been asked to provide his observations on the matter.

Both Everton and Liverpool have also been warned about their future conduct, but avoided any charges, following a melee when Toffees midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure was booked for kicking Fabinho.

It came after play was allowed to continue despite Richarlison lying on the ground injured.
