Mikel Arteta has a defining transfer window as Arsenal manager after a disastrous first full campaign at the Emirates. But the inexperienced Spaniard boss could be backed in the market with a huge transfer budget of £250m this summer, according to reports.
The Gunners will start the new season without European football for the first time in 25 years after a lowly eighth-place Premier League finish.
Arteta’s nadir came in the Europa League semi-final defeat to eventual champions Villarreal at the Emirates, managed by predecessor Unai Emery.
It is widely accepted that Arteta must undergo a sizeable rebuild this summer with significant investment needed if the north London club are to compete for the European places again.
Arteta has to find a balance between proven quality and youthful exuberance in his squad but will require financial backing from maligned owner Stan Kroenke.
And according to 90min, Kroenke has agreed to a huge overhaul, pledging £250m to invest in at least five new first team players.

Brighton’s White is already attracting serious interest from the Emirates as Arteta shapes his defence following the departure of David Luiz.
The 23-year-old centre-back impressed as Graham Potter’s side avoided relegation last season, earning himself a place in Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man England squad.
After initially being one of seven cut from the squad, he later replaced injured Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Sky Sports recently reported that the Gunners have already had a £40m bid turned down for the ball-playing defender.

Bissouma is another Brighton star who could bolster Arteta’s squad with Arsenal in desperate need of midfield reinforcements.
The Gunners require two central midfielders this summer and Bissouma is one of the most coveted options in the Premier League.
The combative defensive midfielder has been an ever-present under Potter and could play a similar role under Arteta.
Granit Xhaka and Matteo Guendouzi are facing uncertain futures at the Emirates and 24-year-old Bissouma is entering the best period of his career.
Bernd Leno’s future is in doubt after three years at the Emirates and that has left Arteta considering his goalkeeping options.
Sky Sports report that Sheffield United shot-stopper Ramsdale is one of a number of targets.
Ramsdale is likely to seek a move this summer after failing to help the Blades avoid relegation.
The highly-rated goalkeeper could come at a relatively cheap price this summer, though there will be doubts over his immediate suitability to become Gunners number one.
Maddison is the highest-profile player on this list, but Arsenal must show ambition this summer.
According to football.london, Arteta is a big fan of the Leicester City playmaker.
Arsenal need to fill a creative hole after missing out on Emi Buendia to Aston Villa and Maddison would be a statement signing.
Kroenke’s huge £250m transfer kitty should allow Arsenal the opportunity to bid for Maddison while pursuing other options.
But Leicester’s likely reluctance to sell and other interested parties would be obvious stumbling blocks in a move.
