Fantasist fellas convinced they are better than England’s Euro-winning Lionesses

Blokes reckon they are better footballers than the Lionesses.

The fantasist fellas think they are more than a match for the professional female stars who launch their bid for World Cup glory in Australia this weekend. England’s women, who are managed by Sarina Wiegman, lifted the nation’s first major international football trophy in 56 years when they won the Euros last year – beating Germany in the final at Wembley.

But when sporty men were asked to compare themselves to the squad, 34% said they were better than the women. Around 15% thought they were more skilful at heading or tackling. A spokesman for odds website BonusCodeBets, which carried out the research, said the figures were “eye-opening”.

He added: “I think they may need to have a rethink if they honestly believe Sarina Wiegman would take them to Australia and New Zealand.”

At least David Beckham, who caught up with Alessia Russo, 24, ahead of the Lionesses’ first match against Haiti on Saturday, sees the squad’s talent.

Becks, 48, said: "I’ve seen the talent and seen the passion you guys have got it’s incredible.”
