Fans spot Chelsea goal should never have stood after blunder from officials

Chelsea fans were quick to spot they were lucky to be awarded a corner leading up to Antonio Rudiger's header against Real Madrid.

The Blues faced mission impossible when they travelled to the Bernabeu on Tuesday evening, trailing Los Blancos by two goals. Mason Mount struck early in the first half before Rudiger nodded Thomas Tuchel's side level early in the second period.

However, eagle-eyed fans noticed Chelsea shouldn't have been awarded a corner after Ruben Loftus-Cheek's strike didn't touch Luka Modric. Fortunately for the Blues, the referee, Szymon Marciniak, deemed the ball had touched the Croatian on its way through.

One fan tweeted: "Chelsea lucky there, that wasn't a corner at all. But a good header from Rudiger, we have a game back on!"

"What’s the point of VAR if you can’t bring that back? You can clearly tell it’s not a corner with one replay," another questioned. While a third said: "Chelsea fans can’t even complain about Alonso's goal cos the corner that led to Rudiger's goal didn’t even deflect off Modric looooool!"

And one Real fan fumed: "That wasn’t a corner, didn’t touch Modric, how much can this dirtbag team get away with man honestly."

Chelsea were soon on the other hand of a controversial call when Marcos Alonso thought he had sent Chelsea through to the semi-finals after blasting the ball past Thibaut Courtois.

However, VAR deemed that the ball had bounced up onto Alonso's hand during the build-up to the goal.

Timo Werner did net a third, but two minutes after entering the action Rodrygo fired Real Madrid level on aggregate sending the game to extra-time.
