Fabio Vieira has joined Arsenal from FC Porto on a long-term contract – but his new number has cast some doubt.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who made 54 appearances during his time with the Portuguese giants, made his first-team debut in June 2020 and was part of the Primeira Liga winning side that won the league both this season and last. But some fans have raised the issue that the midfielder will be wearing the number 21 – a kit that has not gone down too well with supporters.

Some of the past players who wore the number 21 include Calum Chambers, Lukasz Fabianski, Mart Poom, Jermaine Pennant, Tomas Danilevicius, Luís Boa Morte, Eddie McGoldrick, and Steve Morrow.

Indeed it is not exactly a gleaming list of names. Pennant could not find his feet at Arsenal and was soon shipped off to Birmingham City, Chambers played over 100 games for the side but never held down a top in the first team, Poom played just a single game for the club, Boa Morte featured just three times for the Gunners. Danilevicius played just twice, McGoldrick featured 38 times, and last Fabianski was used as a backup.

But there is a sense of huge anticipation with regards to Gunner’s latest recruit. Vieira has amassed a huge reputation and Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta spoke of his delight in getting the youngster to the Emirates Stadium on a £34million deal.

We are all looking forward to working with him and enjoying his future contribution to Arsenal.
