The FA have reportedly contactedWayne Rooneyafter he admittedhe wore longer studs in a match against Chelsea“because he wanted to hurt someone”.

Rooney made the change before a match for Manchester United against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on April 29, 2006.

Jose Mourinho’s side held a nine-point lead over United with three games to go and only needed a draw to lift the Premier League trophy.

Rooney went into the match 16 years ago with the intention of trying to hurt his opponents – something he achieved in a brutal clash with John Terry that day.

His comments could come back to bite him, however, withThe Athleticreporting that the FA have now asked the Derby County manager for his observations around his claims.

Rooney was asked about the situation following Derby’s 3-1 win over Hull City in the Championship on Tuesday night.

"I don’t really want to talk about that," he said. "I’m sure it will get dealt with."

Chelsea won the game 3-0 thanks to goals from William Gallas, Joe Cole and Ricardo Carvalho and lifted the Premier League trophy that day.

But Terry finished the match in pain following a crunching tackle with Rooney in the early stages, which left him bleeding from the top of his foot.

"I changed my studs before the game," Rooney told theMail on Sunday, ahead of the release of an Amazon Prime documentary called ‘Rooney’ on Friday.

"I put longer studs in because I wanted to hurt someone.

"If Chelsea won a point, they won the league. At that time, I couldn't take it.
