Liverpool are playing catch-up as they face Burnley in Thursday's Premier League clash – with Jurgen Klopp needing to end his side's goalless slump.

Klopp's side go into the game six points off the summit after Manchester United returned to top spot with their win at Fulham on Wednesday.

The Reds are also behind Manchester City and Leicester after their second- and third-placed rivals also won in midweek.

And Liverpool desperately need to end their goal drought after their 0-0 draw against United meant they had failed to score in their last three league games.

Sunday's Anfield stalemate drew fresh criticism towards the Reds' misfiring front line, with Jamie Carragher suggesting Roberto Firmino could be axed if he doesn't up his goal contribution.

But Klopp has since defended Firmino, saying he didn't feel the Brazilian striker's performance levels had dropped – suggesting the 29-year-old could keep his place.

Diogo Jota is still out, but Takumi Minamino will be pushing for a start as Klopp looks to revitalise his attack.

However, the manager is expected to keep faith with Mohamed Salah and Mane – with the Senegal striker the only player to have scored for the Reds in their last four league games.

The good news for Liverpool is that Joel Matip could be fit to start after returning to full training this week following injury.

With Matip resuming his partnership with Fabinho at centre-half, Jordan Henderson will be free to move back into midfield after deputising in defence against United.

The skipper will most likely line up with Gini Wijnaldum and Thiago, who made his home debut against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side at the weekend.

Alisson will play between the sticks as Liverpool look to keep a third clean sheet in four Premier League games, while flying full-backs Trent-Alexander Arnold and Andy Robertson while provide creativity out wide.

Xherdan Shaqiri will be an option from the bench after a decent performance from the winger in midfield against United.

Liverpool predicted XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Fabinho, Robertson; Thiago, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mane.
