- City made their pressure count as Georgia Stanway prodded home the winner
Manchester City Women have lifted their third FA Cup after seeing off a stoic Everton side in a thrilling final at Wembley.
In a nip-and-tuck opening half, the two sides would be separated by a piece of quality in the pouring rain at Wembley. And it was delivered by Mewis, who rose highest to power home a header from an Alex Greenwood corner.
The Toffees responded on the hour mark with a set piece of their own as Valerie Gauvin flicked in a corner with the back of her head to keep the game alive with 30 minutes remaining.
City looked the more likely to get in front again but were unable to make their pressure count as the game ended goalless after extra time. But Georgia Stanway ensured it didn’t go to penalties with a neat finish to win it for City.
Janine Beckie put the result beyond doubt by slotting home with the final kick of the game to hand City another famous win as they defended their FA Cup title.
