Everton closing in £18m deal for Sporting Lisbon star Matheus Nunes after breakthrough season helped his side land the Portuguese title

  • Managerless Everton are in talks with Sporting Lisbon over Matheus Nunes

  • Toffees have turned attention towards shock move for Rafa Benitez as new boss

Everton are continuing discussions with Sporting Lisbon over an £18million deal for Brazilian midfielder Matheus Nunes, 22.

A deal is edging closer to completion, with the Toffees having reportedly already agreed terms with Matheus on a contract which will see his salary skyrocket from £170,000 a year to £1m, according to A Bola.

Matheus has just enjoyed a strong breakthrough season at Sporting Lisbon, making 39 appearances in all competitions and adding two goals from his role playing just in front of the defence.

Everton are pursuing a deal for 22-year-old Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes

Although he started just 12 games in the Portuguese top flight, he did help Sporting to their first league title in 19 years.

It appears to be enough to have convinced Everton he can help revitalise a side who are still without a manger following the shock exit of Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid this summer.

Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez could be set to take over at Goodison Park, but supporters have been left furious at the potential rival of the Spaniard following his association with their bitter local rivals where he won the Champions League in 2005 during six years in charge.

Rafael Benitez is in the frame to become Everton manager and is expecting an offer

But angry fans left signs outside Goodison Park making their feelings known about him

On Thursday night, banners were seen outside Goodison with a clear message that fans do not want Benitez.

One read: ‘F**k off Benitez you fat Kopite c***’, while another simply read ‘Benitez not welcome.’

Benitez has a wealth of experience and is undoubtedly qualified to take the job but the board are split on appointing him.

Evidently, the massive fan backlash would only intensify if results started to go against him but he is expecting an official offer from majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri.
