Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick could axe eight players this year as he looks to set the Red Devils on their way to becoming a Premier League powerhouse once again. Rangnick is unbeaten since taking over as United boss at the end of November.

The 13-times Premier League champions have been in decent form under the German manager and have secured victories over Crystal Palace, Norwich and Burnley on top of draws with Young Boys and Newcastle.

United appear to be moving in the right direction, but there is plenty of hard work ahead of Rangnick.

And the 63-year-old will need to decide which players he thinks should stay at the club beyond the current campaign.

Express Sport takes a look at eight players who could be axed under Rangnick this year.

Donny van de Beek

The mystery surrounding Donny van de Beek’s lack of United gametime has continued to dominate the Old Trafford subplot narrative this season.

The Netherlands international was barely given a sniff of an opportunity under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before the former manager was sacked in the autumn.

Van de Beek has played six minutes of Premier League football under Rangnick and it remains to be seen whether the German sees the midfielder as part of his plans.

Dean Henderson

Dean Henderson looked set to take over the No 1 spot at the start of this season after being preferred to David de Gea towards the end of the last campaign.

But De Gea has materialised as United’s first-choice stopper after regaining his top form.

Henderson is regarded as one of the best young keepers in the country and Rangnick could decide to cash in on the 24-year-old while his stock is high.

Eric Bailly

Eric Bailly has looked far from convincing for United over the last couple of seasons and could be a player who is deemed surplus to requirements in Manchester.

The 27-year-old still has two-and-a-half years on his Red Devils contract and Rangnick could look to offload him in return for a handsome fee.

Phil Jones

Phil Jones has not appeared for United for nearly two years after falling out of favour and suffering injury problems.

Donny van de Beek has ruined chance of Man Utd January exit

But he has been tipped to make a sensational return to the side for United’s clash with Wolves on Monday night due to a centre-back crisis.

Jones was once tipped as one of the hottest properties in English football, but could soon be shipped off for good.

Nemanja Matic

Nemanja Matic was once a Premier League star for Chelsea and United. These days he is only a bit-part player, however.

Matic has one more season remaining on his Old Trafford contract – but Rangnick may prefer to sell the midfielder in the summer to help him fund new faces.

Edinson Cavani

Edinson Cavani is out of contract in the summer and has been tipped to make a move to Barcelona this month.

The Uruguay international has fallen down the pecking order since the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo and is likely to walk away for free in a few months anyway.

So Rangnick could sanction a move to the Catalans to ensure United at least get some sort of fee for the 34-year-old.

Jesse Lingard

Another big-name player coming to the end of his contract in the north west is Jesse Lingard.

The England forward turned down a move to West Ham last summer but will probably be regretting that decision now after being given little gametime this season.

Rangnick might again try to sell Lingard this month to avoid the prospect of almost certainly being forced to watch him leave for free at the end of the campaign.

Juan Mata

Juan Mata doesn’t appear to be close to the first-team at United these days and hasn’t played a single minute of Premier League football this campaign.

And Rangnick probably has no intentions of keeping the former Chelsea man beyond this season.
