Edu drops hint about more Arsenal signings after first summer transfer confirmed

Arsenal technical director Edu has hinted that more signings are on the way following the capture of Willian. The 32-year-old winger has joined the Gunners on a free transfer after his contract at Chelsea came to an end. Arsenal are on the hunt for a number of new signings, despite having a limited transfer budget at their disposal due to the financial impact of the coronavirus crisis and the prospect of a fourth season outside the Champions League.

Mikel Arteta is eager to reshape the squad he inherited from Unai Emery after an encouraging end to a troubled campaign that saw the team win the FA Cup.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey is the top target, another season-long loan for Dani Ceballos has been earmarked, a central defender is also on the agenda, while Philippe Coutinho continues to be linked.

Willian represents a significant investment in terms of wages for Arsenal, and Edu has revealed that his signing represents the start of a transfer overhaul and indicated that more new arrivals are on the way.

“He has a lot of fantastic attributes as a person, as a football player of course, his character,” he told the club’s official website. “I’m 100 per cent sure that everybody in the dressing room, the fans, myself and Mikel will enjoy having Willian in our side.

“We tried to create a better balance in the squad but we know that takes time to balance the squad the way me and Mikel want to. To balance properly, we need to sell players, to buy players and that takes time, not just day and night.

“It will take time but with Willian, we’ve started a big process. We’ve identified the needs in the squad and he’s the one to start to rebalance the squad as we want to.

“I am really excited and really happy to have a player like Willian because I’m convinced he’ll be the one to impact the team straight away. That, for me, is the most important one because I think the squad needed a player like Willian to help them, to be with the guys, helping in all senses. That’s why I’m so excited.”

Willian was delighted to seal the move to the Emirates Stadium after Arsenal agreed to his request for a three-year contract.

“I’m very excited to become an Arsenal player – I can’t wait to start training and playing with my team-mates,” he said.

“I decided [to join] because Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world. They have a new project with Mikel Arteta.

“I think this club deserves to shine again and I want to be a part of this project – to be a part of the Arsenal family is amazing. I’m very happy to do that.

“I come to try to win trophies, because this club deserves to win again, and I think you have to do the best as possible to win every game. I always train hard and go on the pitch giving 100 per cent to help this team to win games and to win titles as well.”
