Arsenal were without club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for their Premier League clash against Southampton on Saturday – with Mikel Arteta refusing to go into detail over his omission.

The out-of-form striker was left out of the match day squad with his manager citing a "disciplinary breach", and not for the first time following a similar decision back in March.

Details have now emerged about the decision taken by staff at the club, with Arteta insisting that the rules have to be followed by everyone.

He said when asked about the absence of Aubameyang before the fixture at the Emirates: "Unfortunately due to a disciplinary breach.

"I think we’ve been very consistent with no negotiables as a team that we have set ourselves as a club, so he’s not involved today.

“Certainly, it’s not an easy situation, a situation that we want our club captain to be in.”

The Athletic report that Aubameyang was given permission to fly abroad for personal reasons, but returned later than had been agreed between both parties.

That is said to have led to his exclusion from the squad, with his late return having implications for the Covid-19 protocols at the club before Saturday's clash, which Arsenal ultimately won 3-0.

Aubameyang was left out of a squad to play Tottenham back in March, with Arteta saying that there had been a disciplinary breach, with Arsenal going on to win.

Arteta said at the time: "We have drawn the line, we move on, and he is on the bench.

"We have a process for every game that we have to respect. It was a decision made after evaluating everything and who Auba is and what he's done.

"We have other players who can play. Recently we have changed the team quite a lot and there are players who are willing to play and deserve a chance, so I'm comfortable with that."

This weekend, Piers Morgan lashed out at the words of Arteta.

He said: "I don’t like the way Arteta treats Auba – the guy’s one of the best strikers in the game & has scored a barrel-load of goals for us.

"When a player like that goes through a lean patch, a top manager tells the world how brilliant he is – he doesn’t drop him & belittle him."

Before adding: "Second time Arteta’s publicly thrown Auba under the bus like this over internal ‘discipline’ issues. Just outrageous disloyalty to a guy who’s scored 68 goals for us in 128 games."
