Details of Arsenal’s secret Aston Villa friendly emerge including goalscorers

Arsenal could not carry the momentum of their Community Shield win into a secret friendly against Aston Villa as they fell short in north London.

The low key affair at the Emirates Stadium ended 3-2 to the home side, as Mikel Arteta’s backline looked shaky once again.

The Gunners went behind first as Douglas Luiz struck the opener, before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang found the back of the net once again to equalise.

Young midfielder Jacob Ramsey put the visitors ahead again, but Aubameyang was on hand to tuck home a penalty and level the score.

However, Villa had the final say as England U19 international Ramsey grabbed the winner to give them a boost ahead of the new season which starts next weekend.

Both sides fielded younger teams due to the international break.

Arsenal were missing several players including Kieran Tierney, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Granit Xhaka, among others, who were participating in the Nations League.

Meanwhile, Bukayo Saka, Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nketiah were also on duty for England U21’s who are playing two EURO qualifiers.

Villa were without Jack Grealish and Tyrone Mings, who are both with England, as well as John McGinn and Conor Hourihane, representing Scotland and the Republic of Ireland respectively.

Saturday’s friendly saw Willian make his first appearance in an Arsenal shirt.

Upon joining the Gunners from rivals Chelsea, he said: “I decided [to join] because Arsenal are one of the biggest clubs in the world. They have a new project with Mikel Arteta.
