More than a year has passed since Daniel Sturridge was last employed by a professional club, but the former England striker looks sure to turn heads in his latest effort to find new employment.
That’s after the 31-year-old posted footage of himself running training drills on Instagram, bearing his fit physique for all to see—and hopefully a few Premier League clubs will take notice.
Sturridge hasn’t played since his contract at Turkish outfit Trabzonspor was terminated by mutual consent in March 2020.
It emerged soon after that the forward had been served a four-month suspension from football and a £150,000 fine for breaching the FA’s betting laws towards the end of his six-year stay at Liverpool.
The former Chelsea and Manchester City forward may not have kicked a ball professionally since then, but his touch nonetheless looked top drawer in this latest update:
Sturridge—who scored seven goals and recorded four assists in 16 games for Trabzonspor prior to his release—uploaded a string of videos showcasing his different attributes with the caption: “Putting in work babbbyyyyy!!”
Some clips highlighted the strength of his agility, first touch and close control, while others were shot from longer range and illustrated his speed over distance.
Potential employers may be forgiven feeling hesitant to hire an ageing forward who’s been out of action for so long, particularly one who had eight separate injuries during his first seven months in Turkey, per Transfermarkt.
Which Premier League club do you think should sign Daniel Sturridge? Let us know in the comments section.
Sturridge was a part of the Liverpool squad that lifted the Champions League title in 2019, though he scored only four times in 27 appearances across all competitions that season (his last at Anfield).
The flamboyant forward was once accustomed to hitting headlines for his scoring exploits, though he was more recently in the paper after having his dog stolen from his Los Angeles home.
The Daily Mirror reported in late March that several Major League Soccer clubs—including David Beckham’s Inter Miami—were considering offering Sturridge a lifeline in the United States.
However, the 26-cap former England international may first bide his time in the hopes of earning a new deal somewhere in Europe.
Sturridge has been keeping up to date with some of his former team-mates as England progressed to the final of Euro 2020, with Gareth Southgate’s side set to meet Italy on Sunday.
He congratulated former Reds team-mate Raheem Sterling in particular following the 2-1 extra-time win over Denmark in the semi-finals: “This England team is doing bits man. @sterling7 was sensational again. Player of the tournament for me. Roll on Sunday baby!! Looking forward to seeing the boys lift that trophy #ItsComingHome.”
Sturridge may no longer be the player that scored 68 goals and laid on 26 assists in 160 outings for Liverpool, but the latest display of fitness to his 3.4million Instagram followers advertised his talents well.
He’ll hope the social media push helps drive some interest in his services, with a little more than a month until the 2021/22 Premier League season begins on August 14.
