Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken out on social media following Portugal’s failure to qualify for the World Cup. Fernando Santos’ team will have to go through the play-offs if they’re to be part of the competition in Qatar next year. And the Manchester United star was furious at the full time whistle.

Portugal merely needed to draw with Serbia to ensure their qualification for next year’s World Cup.

But the Euro 2016 winners slumped to a 2-1 defeat on their own turf to plunge their involvement in the Qatar showpiece into uncertainty.

Portugal went ahead through Renato Sanches after just two minutes, with the Lille star taking his goal nicely.

But Dusan Tadic and Aleksandar Mitrovic struck to give Serbia all three points and ensure they automatically qualify for the World Cup instead.

After the game, Ronaldo was furious.

The United star had a huge strop on the pitch, even throwing away his armband – in footage the TV cameras missed.

Ronaldo was also angry at Portugal boss Santo, with the pair having a heated exchange.

And now, taking to social media, Ronaldo has insisted he and his team-mates will do all they can to make amends.

“Football has shown us time and time again that, at times, it is the most winding paths that lead to the most desired outcomes,” he said.

“Yesterday’s result was tough, but not enough to get us down.

“The objective of being present at the 2022 World Cup is still very much alive and we know what we have to do to get there.

“No excuses. Portugal heading to Qatar.”

Ronaldo has never won the World Cup with Portugal.

He first played in the tournament back in 2006, when it was held in Germany, famously helping his side beat England in the last eight.

However, Portugal were beaten by France in the semi-finals with Ronaldo powerless to prevent them from exiting the competition.

In 2010, Spain got the better of Ronaldo’s side courtesy of David Villa to send them crashing out.

Four years later, Ronaldo and Portugal failed to make it out of a group including Germany, the United States and Ghana.

And, in 2018, Santos’ side were eliminated by Uruguay with Edinson Cavani at the double.

Meanwhile, the Portugal boss feels his team were unlucky against Serbia on Sunday.

Santos said: “It looked like it was going to be, but it wasn’t.

“We scored the goal, we had the initial moments. But then we started to drop deep a lot.

“Serbia were better. We tried.

“Our DNA is to have the ball on our feet and play. Bernardo Silva wanted the ball, but he was the only one.

“We played with fear and anxiety. It’s my responsibility.”
