Copenhagen striker Michael Santos has been charged for alleged assault on a policeman after pushing an officer over during wild celebrations in Thursday night’s Europa League victory over Celtic.

Santos, who had opened the scoring at Parkhead, was captured by TV cameras flooring a policeman after running over to celebrate Pep Biel’s late goal.

A large group of officers were stationed in front of the travelling supporters and the altercation appeared to happen as police attempted to subdue Copenhagen’s celebrations.

Police Scotland confirmed on Friday that Santos and a member of the Copenhagen staff were both charged in connection with an alleged assault.

A spokeswoman for the force said: ‘Two men aged 26 and 42 were charged in connection with an alleged assault at Celtic Park last night. They have been reported to the Procurator Fiscal.’

The charges mar what had been a famous victory for Copenhagen to put them into the last-16 of the Europa League.

The Danish side’s players were visibly angered by the police’s decision to interrupt their celebrations after Biel scored in the 84th minute to put the visitors’ 2-1 ahead.

Biel appeared to be grabbed and swung around by a policeman and exchanged words with him before Santos ran over and sent an officer tumbling.

Santos walked away wagging his finger at the officers after the incident.

Odsonne Edouard had levelled the score for Celtic with a cheeky Paneka penalty just minutes before Biel restored the visitors’ lead.

Dame N’Doye added a third two minutes from time to seal Copenhagen’s spot in the last 16 of the Europa League after a 4-2 victory on aggregate.

Meanwhile, police also confirmed that eight fans in total were arrested on Thursday night – six home supporters and two away fans – for minor disorders.
