Comedy own goal has Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp smiling in pre-season clash

A comedy own goal in Liverpool's pre-season friendly against Mainz has left Jurgen Klopp smiling as he blooded some of the Reds' talented youngsters in the clash.

The clash won't live long in the memory, and the deadlock was only broken in the 85th minute when Mainz's Luca Kilian sent Owen Beck’s cross past his own goalkeeper.

When trying to flick the ball away – to stop on an onrushing Liverpool player getting a tap in – Kilian looped the ball into the top corner in a freak own goal.

And the result left Klopp happy with his side's performance.

"Yes, I am happy about a lot of situations I saw; I saw in the first half some really good football where we came through," the German said in his post-match interview.

"The kids are doing well, I have to say.

"I really enjoyed a lot watching them and helping them to understand the game better and better and better, to understand the position and they have to be brave otherwise it would be a waste of time.

"That Owen was involved in the goal is nice for him, he played good I have to say."

Klopp started his managerial career at Mainz, and he guided them back into the Bundesliga before he took the Borussia Dortmund job in 2008.

He also spent 11 of his playing years Die Nullfünfer, where he made 325 appearances and found the net 52 times.
