Chelsea warned they could miss out on top four by ‘worried’ fans’ favourite

Former Chelsea fan favourite Frank Leboeuf isn’t convinced by what he’s seen of the Blues in recent weeks and reckons his old side won’t finish in the top four this season. The west Londoners have endured a mixed start to the 2020-21 Premier League season.

After five rounds of fixtures, last season’s beaten FA Cup finalists currently occupy seventh place in the league table.

Two wins, two draws and one solitary defeat have left the Blues five points behind pacesetters Everton, although it’s still early days yet.

Defensive vulnerabilities have been Chelsea’s undoing so far this season and were once again on show in their 3-3 draw with Southampton on Saturday evening.

And their worrying start to the new season has left Lebeouf in no doubt about their chances of qualifying for the Champions League next season.

I’m not convinced at all about Chelsea right now

“I’m not convinced at all about Chelsea right now,” the former Blues defender told ESPN. “It’s like they don’t know each other, they’re not fit enough, I’m very worried.

“I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt because I don’t know what they’re worth, but, really, if they keep on performing like that, for sure they’re not going to finish in the top four.”

Blues manager Frank Lampard spent close to £230million in the summer acquiring the services of seven new players, the most expensive being Germany international Kai Havertz.

Although Havertz found the back of the net in Saturday’s disappointing draw with Saints, Lebeouf hasn’t been impressed by what he’s seen of the £72million summer signing.

“I’m not convinced about Havertz, I’m not that optimistic,” the Frenchman said. “I’m very pleased with Werner, he’s a real satisfaction.

“Thiago Silva should have been back because it’s crucial for Chelsea to have a real leader at the back and that’s the main problem.

“They all have to work hard physically to make sure they can play together and be stronger together.”

A late goal from Jan Verstergard denied Chelsea their second home win of the season and left a bitter taste in the mouth of Havertz.

“We’re very frustrated about the result,” the German midfielder told Chelsea’s official website. “We had 42 good minutes in the first half but then I made a mistake and we conceded a goal, which changed the game a little bit.

“We got it to 3-2 and then we have to take the result and get the win at home but we didn’t do it. Now we have to stick together and hopefully we can do better next time.”

He added: “We have to take responsibility for that. We have 11 players on the pitch and everybody has to work hard so we don’t concede goals like this.

‘It’s not always one person who makes the mistake so we have to look at our mistakes and try to solve the problems.

“We only have one or two days, only one training session with all the players together so of course it’s different but every team has to deal with it, not only us. We didn’t have a lot of preparation so now we have to work hard and stay together to do better next time.”
