Neymar ‘considered joining Chelsea’ after the Blues put in a transfer offer for the Brazilian superstar when he was at Santos confirms former agent
- Chelsea looked to sign Neymar for just £25m when he was 17-years-old
- The move was considered but it was decided he should stay at Santos
- Neymar eventually left to join Barcelona three years after Chelsea’s interest
Neymar’s former agent has revealed that Chelsea once made a serious attempt to sign the Brazilian superstar.
Chelsea’s interest in the starlet came when the then 17-year-old youngster was learning his trade at Santos back in 2010.
The Blues were one of several top European clubs who enquired about his availability, and his agent at the time Wagner Ribiero admitted the move was considered.
Neymar’s former agent has revealed they considered a move to Chelsea back in 2010
‘There were many calls for him,’ Ribiero recalled to AS. ‘I received an official offer from Chelsea the day Neymar debuted with the Brazilian team in 2010.
‘They made an offer, we studied it, but in the end we didn’t decide anything. On that occasion we transferred it to Neymar’s father and the player himself.
‘Then came other offers from Bayern Munich and Juventus with whom I had a meeting in Turin.’
A move to Chelsea back in 2010 would have seen him join the then reigning Premier League champions under manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Santos’ former president, Luis Alvaro de Oliveira Ribiero, has previously claimed that Chelsea’s offer was valued around £25m.
Neymar and his representatives are believed to have agreed terms at a private meeting with Chelsea chiefs, before later changing their mind to stay at Santos to further his development.
Neymar could have linked up with Carlo Ancelotti if the Brazilian decided to join Chelsea
Neymar eventually left to join Barcelona and now plays football at Paris Saint-Germain
Barcelona would go on to sign Neymar, three years after Chelsea’s initial interest.
The Brazilian would form the legendary ‘MSN’ front line consisting of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and himself.
He won two LaLiga titles in Spain as well as the 2014-15 Champions League, before joining Paris Saint-Germain for a world record £200m fee.
The 28-year-old has won two Ligue 1 titles in Paris, but has been linked with a move away from the club back to Barcelona.
