Chelsea have reached out to Leicester City over the possibility of a move for Wesley Fofana ahead of next season, according to reports. The 20-year-old, who arrived at the King Power Stadium to replace Harry Maguire last year, is said to be a man in demand after impressing for the Foxes during his first season at the club.

Fofana has missed the entirety of the current campaign after picking up a serious injury in a pre-season friendly against Villarreal.

The Frenchman is not expected to return to full fitness until next year as he continues his recovery from a fractured right fibula and damaged ankle ligaments.

However, he gained a formidable reputation as one of the Premier League’s finest young defenders prior to his enforced spell on the sidelines.

He made 38 appearances in all competitions last season, establishing himself as a key man under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers.

Although Fofana has been out of action for some time, there appears to be no shortage of interest in a move for his services.

Chelsea are said to be among the clubs keeping an eye on the defender, who remains under contract until the summer of 2025, while Manchester United and Real Madrid have also been credited with an interest in his signature.

However, it seems as though the Blues could already be one step ahead of the competition in the race to land Fofana.

They have wasted no time in establishing contact with Leicester as they look to add reinforcements at the back ahead of next season, according to Foot Mercato.

A number of Chelsea defenders will be out of contract in the summer, including the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta.

The European champions are said to be keen on bringing Fofana to Stamford Bridge in order to provide a long-term option to feature at the heart of their defence over the years to come.

It is claimed that Leicester will not be looking to sell their man on the cheap, however, with a significant fee likely to be required to force through his exit.

The Foxes will reportedly hold out for a sum close to the £80million paid by United to land Maguire back in 2019.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether Chelsea will be successful in their attempts to bring Fofana to Stamford Bridge over the coming weeks and months.

The man himself recently suggested that he would prefer to join boyhood club Marseille if he leaves Leicester in the near future, suggesting that Chelsea would need to convince him that a move to west London would be in his best interests.

“I have been a Marseille fan since I was born,” said Fofana during a discussion on Twitter Spaces earlier this week.

“Marseille, it is a dream. We don’t know what is waiting for us in football. There is Marseille, Real Madrid, Barcelona.

“In the Premier League, Chelsea, Man United, Man City… but you have to work to achieve your dreams. Through work, you can succeed in it all.”
