Chelsea hunt new sporting director after Petr Cech and Todd Boehly disagreements

Chelsea will press ahead with the search for a new sporting director after waving goodbye to Petr Cech on Monday.

Blues great Cech quit the club after talks with new chairman Todd Boehly, having disagreed with him over a series of key decisions. The former Czech Republic goalkeeper leaves his role as technical and performance advisor after three years in the role.

He was instrumental in bringing Chelsea No.1 Edouard Mendy to the club but wanted the club to give Romelu Lukaku another year to prove himself. Lukaku will spend next season on loan at Inter Milan – and Cech now joins him through the exit, following Bruce Buck and Marina Granovskaia out of Chelsea in a major shake-up.

Boehly and Blues boss Thomas Tuchel are taking over full control of transfers until a full-time sporting director is appointed.

Michael Edwards, who performed a similar role for Liverpool before deciding to leave last November, is one of several candidates being sounded for that role. Other names in the frame include former Brazil full back Maxwell, currently assistant sporting director at PSG, and Paul Mitchell of Monaco.

Cech leaves Stamford Bridge after playing a major role in placating angry fans protesting about the club's flirtation with a European Super League.

He said: "It has been a huge privilege to perform this role at Chelsea for the past three years. With the club under new ownership, I feel now is the right time for me to step aside.

"I am pleased that the club is now in an excellent position with the new owners, and I am confident of its future success both on and off the pitch.”

Boehly, chairman and co-controlling owner, added: “Petr is an important member of the Chelsea family. "We understand his decision to step away and thank him for his contributions as an advisor and his commitment to the club and to our community. We wish him the best.”
