Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Gabriel Magalhaes in the upcoming transfer window.
The Blues have made a defender a top priority after a particularly leaky year at the back.
Prior to the coronavirus crisis decimating the football calendar, conceding 39 in 29 matches – the most in the top six.
Frank Lampard has been known to chop and change his backline, with the likes of Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen, Fikayo Tomori and Antonio Rudiger in and out.
The former Derby coach wants to bring in four players in the next transfer window.
A centre-back takes precedent but there is also a great urge to get a striker, a winger and a left-back in.
The club already has targets in mind for the other positions but in defence it proved trickier.
That is until now, with Eurosport's Manu Lonjon reporting that the Blues are close to beating Everton to the signing of Lille star Gabriel.
“Gabriel (LOSC) at Chelsea is very hot,” Lonjon wrote on Twitter . “Almost completed. Everton also tries it but Chelsea far ahead…”
The 22-year-old has been earmarked as a potential huge star in the future.
Built with a huge frame, but still good on the ball and with bags of pace.
He is also left-footed and would suit Lampard's system at the back, fitting in on the left-hand side of either a back four or three-at-the-back.
Chelsea had the chance to watch the former Troyes loanee in the Champions League when they took on Lille, with the defender playing both matches in the group stage.
The Brazilian's contract expires in 2023 after signing an extension as early as January.
Gabriel recently opened up over interest in him from the Premier League, with Everton also keen on his services.
“I just renewed the contract,” he said. “I heard about conversations, I saw things on websites in England, but I have my head in Lille.
“I’m very calm to finish the season well and to achieve great things next season.”
