Chelsea fans make Kepa decision after Edouard Mendy’s Champions League showing

Chelsea fans have made a decision on Kepa Arrizabalaga after second goalkeeper Edouard Mendy’s Champions League showing. The Blues could not secure a win on their first European game of the season, held to a 0-0 draw by Sevilla.

One man not part of the proceedings was Kepa, whose future in west London has been thrown into doubt after a poor start to the season.

It saw Frank Lampard bring in Mendy from Rennes this summer, paying £22million for the 28-year-old.

The shot-stopper has been thrown straight in at the deep end, making three appearances including the European game.

And footage has emerged of how Mendy stepped up on the big stage last night.

In the clip, there are just 17 minutes on the board with no breakthrough from either side.

Sevilla have won a free kick in the middle of the opposition half, with Suso floating the ball in.

And midfielder Nemanja Gudelj wins the header on the left side of goal, aiming for a bouncing effort.

But Mendy, who is already leaning towards the right, manages to adjust himself and claw the ball away from goal with a huge left hand.

After tHe game, Lampard suggested that the Senegalese international had earned himself a promotion at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, the Blues boss said: “The way he’s played in his three games so far, he’s played very well.

“He had a good game today. We knew his qualities when he came in. As it stands he is (No1), but it is always up for grabs.”

This footage was shared on Reddit, where the Blues faithful fully backed the manager’s comments.

“Mendy now has two clean sheets in a tow, something Kepa has failed to achieve since his first season,” one supporter said.

Another commented: “Such a massive difference compared to Kepa.”

While a third suggested the promotion was overdue, with: “Solid save by Mendy, who is already clearly levels above Kepa’s maximum level.”

And a fourth simply added: “Kepa could never.”

But Lampard did send a warning to Mendy that the Spaniard is not completely out of contention at Stamford Bridge.

“We knew his qualities and he is showing them already. So as it stands, yes it is,” he added.

“But that always remains something that is up for grabs, so that is why you have competition at clubs. The way he is playing, I am very happy.”
