Chelsea can use Felix connection to seal summer move for Goncalo Ramos

Chelsea could be tempted to make use of several of their relationships to secure the services of Benfica star Goncalo Ramos, with the club desperate to acquire the services of a striker. The Blues have been starved of a traditional No 9 this season and have made signing one a priority for when the summer transfer window opens.

Chelsea have splashed the cash over the past few transfer windows in order to accelerate their rebuild, though performances suggest that the money has not been well spent at this stage. Graham Potter has paid the price for a torrid start to his tenure, being given the boot over the weekend following a 2-0 loss at the hands of Aston Villa.

The Blues are in no rush to appoint a replacement and have bought themselves some time by bringing in Frank Lampard as an interim. Potter’s true successor will therefore arrive in the summer, and they are expected to have a significant say in the transfer business and which striker target is pursued.

A marquee arrival is expected, and Chelsea could have a major advantage in the race to sign Ramos if they are interested. The Benfica striker has scored 17 in 22 appearances so far this season, catching the attention of several of Europe’s giants – including Manchester United.

Though Chelsea could see the 21-year-old as the perfect acquisition given that he is already proven at the very top level and still at the very start of his career and can improve further. Reports have speculated that Ramos has a £105million release clause, though the Blues could lean on their relationship with the Portuguese side to negotiate a better price given that there is speculation that a fee in the realms of £70m could test Benfica’s resolve.

Benfica sold Enzo Fernandez to Chelsea in the January transfer window and the pair will therefore know how one another functions. The midfielder has settled well in the Premier League, and the Argentina international could put in a good word to Ramos for his side.

Chelsea can also benefit from having worked with well-established agent Jorge Mendes, of Gestifute, in January when they signed his client, Joao Felix, from Atletico Madrid on loan until the end of the season. The playmaker has impressed since joining the Premier League side but his end product has left plenty to desire, though the potential is clear to see.

Mendes also represents Ramos, having a stranglehold on the majority of Portuguese talents, and Chelsea could have the upper hand in talks with the agent after the speed and success of negotiations involving Felix previously.
