Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has reportedly held talks with first-team coach Anthony Barry over his future. The 35-year-old is highly rated by Tuchel, who does not want to lose the Liverpool-born tactician.

The highly-rated Barry has been approached by several clubs over their vacant manager roles but he has so far remained at Stamford Bridge.

Fleetwood Town, Aberdeen, Cardiff City and Tranmere Rovers have all apparently asked about the former Everton trainee’s availability.

Barry mixes his Chelsea duties, where he mostly focuses on set-piece training, with working for the Republic of Ireland national team.

Tuchel is understood to rate Barry highly and was seen congratulating the former Wrexham midfielder after Thiago Silva headed in Mason Mount’s set-piece against West Ham earlier in December.

According to The Athletic, the Chelsea head coach has held extensive talks with Barry about his future and has made clear that he wants the young coach to remain at Stamford Bridge.

However, the report continues that Tuchel shares such a good relationship with Barry that he would have allowed him to accept any of the roles for which he has already been approached.

Barry’s playing career did not take him any higher than League One, in which he played 64 times for Yeovil Town.

However, he has earned a reputation as an excellent coach and has learned loads from Tuchel. He initially joined the Blues academy in the summer of 2020 after working at Wigan Athletic.

Chelsea goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli has explained how Barry makes the Blues effective from set-plays.

“There will be teams who do different set-ups and are vulnerable in certain areas. Anthony’s expertise is looking at that with the analysis guys and seeing where we can find an edge,” the former Fulham shot-stopper told The Athletic.

“We have scored from set pieces this season because of Anthony’s ideas. The manager acknowledges that. It’s crucial because that set piece could win us the game and that’s down to him.”

The third-choice goalkeeper has praised Barry for his meticulous approach to sessions.

“It’s his attention to detail: looking at the opposition, the way they set up,” Bettinelli added.

“He will know if there is a weak area and a place for us to attack, but he does the same with us — if he spots a weak area he’ll find out what we have to do better.

“He will highlight that, pull players aside and say, ‘We can do this or that’. The players take what he says on board. No one questions it.

“Everyone believes in what he tells us. How can you not? We have scored lots of goals from set pieces.”
