Chelsea have switched focus in the transfer market to an alternative centre-back to Jules Kounde according to reports. Thomas Tuchel’s side tried to sign the Sevilla star in the summer, but now feel there’s a chance to aim even higher and tempt Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus.

De Ligt’s has yet to agree to a new contract at Juventus, despite attempts by the Serie A club to get him to sign an extension.

The 22-year-old, who joined from Ajax in 2019, has a release clause built into his existing Juventus deal, which kicks in next summer.

And any club could then force Juventus to sell their star centre-half for a large but not insurmountable asking price of £103million.

The prospect of securing the services of the best young defender in the world is too tempting an opportunity to resist for Chelsea, according to reports from Calciomercato.

And the Blues transfer chief Marina Granovskaia is expected to prioritise De Ligt over a return for Kounde in 2022.

Granovskaia, Roman Abramovich’s right-hand woman, has overseen transfer operations at Stamford Bridge for much of the past decade.

The 46-year-old again had a big hand in securing the signing of Lukaku from Inter Milan this summer.

And Chelsea’s transfer pursuit of Sevilla centre-back Kounde suggests that Granovskaia is also well aware of the potential need to strengthen the club’s defensive ranks.

However, Chelsea were unwilling to raise their bid as high as Sevilla demanded, with the Spanish club believed to have rejected an offer of £43m.

“The only formal offer came from Chelsea,” Sevilla director of football Monchi said after the transfer window closed.

“We weren’t satisfied with the offer, and it was linked to Chelsea selling a player. It was a decent fee but it didn’t meet our criteria.

“There’s been a lot of talk about moves made for Jules, the majority of which were rejected by the player. If there was one club he liked the look of, it was Chelsea.”

Speaking after the transfer window closed, manager Tuchel addressed the failure to bring in Kounde, but insisted that he is happy with the squad he has at Stamford Bridge.

“Marina was in charge and she is the best person who can be in charge,” Tuchel said.

“We knew things can happen, things can happen late, and we were also very aware of the situation that, maybe, nothing happens at all.

“I assured everybody that I’m also happy if we cannot bring a player in,” Tuchel added. “We will find the solution within the squad. We will push players within the squad.

“It was clear we tried for Kounde, but it was a very, very smooth transfer window because I had full concentration on training and on my team.”

Chelsea are expected to return with offers for Kounde if the opportunity to sign De Ligt doesn’t come to pass.
