Chelsea ace ‘vitally important’ ahead of next season despite host of expected new signings

Mason Mount has been highlighted as one of Chelsea’s key players after his display against Wolves, with the 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge securing the Blues a top-four finish and Champions League qualification. Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp was full of praise for the 21-year-old, although it remains to be seen if the youngster will keep his place in the starting XI with a host of new signings expected this summer.

Mount opened the scoring against Wolves with a brilliant free-kick that left goalkeeper Rui Patricio stranded.

The midfielder then played in Olivier Giroud for Chelsea’s second, taking his attacking returns to eight goals and six assists in 51 appearances across all competitions this season.

Former Liverpool ace Redknapp thinks Mount is also key to Chelsea’s pressing game, and has lauded the youngster on his performances in a breakthrough campaign after spending last season on loan at Derby.

“He’s been exceptional, for such a young man,” said Redknapp on Sky Sports.

“What I like most about him is that he starts the press. He’s always the one that, when the ball gets played into midfield or around the back four, he goes and closes down.

“It’s so important for the rest of the team and you can see they all react off it.

“He is vitally important to what Chelsea do. He is all energy, a great football brain and I’ve been so impressed this season.

“He can play as a No 10, he can play off the side, he’s got goals in his game now.

“He’s obviously been practising his free-kicks, which is vital as you want a midfield player to come up with five or six opportunities to score from outside the box.

“I love the way that he plays. He’s so enthusiastic for the game.

“Everything I hear about him is that he’s a spot-on trainer every day and he deserves all the accolades he’s getting right now.”

Mount’s game time next season is sure to come under threat with Chelsea having already signed Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner this summer.

The Blues are also keen on Kai Havertz and are set for talks with Bayer Leverkusen over a £72million move this week.

It remains to be seen how Lampard will fit all his new signings into a balanced line-up next term, but Mount will be hoping to further enhance his reputation in the final matches of the season.

Chelsea face Arsenal in the FA Cup next weekend before the second leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie against Bayern Munich.

The Blues are 3-0 down from the first leg, so Mount and co will need to pull off a minor miracle in order to progress through to the next stage of the competition.
