Casemiro’s move to Manchester United from Real Madrid “screams a little bit of a mercenary”, according to ex-Red Devils goalkeeper Ben Foster. United announced on Friday an agreement has been reached with Real to sign the Brazil midfielder as Erik ten Hag already turns his attention to his next targets.

The Old Trafford club are in desperate need of extra quality in their squad after losing their opening two Premier League matches of the season. Ten Hag has already made three signings but it appears set to be an extremely busy end to the window.

Casemiro is set to be the next player through the door for a fee of around £60million. He will become one of the highest-earning players in the Premier League.

Ten Hag already knows the next three signings he wants to make, with a striker, right-back and goalkeeper targeted. But Foster has raised a question over Casemiro’s impending move.

He claims the 30-year-old can only be joining United for the money after winning five Champions League titles during his time at Real. Foster told talkSPORT: “The thing with Man United is they are so obviously miles off it, so obviously miles off it.

“I read a thing in the paper and United’s wage bill, my gosh, have a look at this bad boy. I’d take a fraction of what some of these guys are on!

“It’s crazy money and even Casemiro, Casemiro doesn’t want to leave Real Madrid. Why would you want to leave Real Madrid?

“I know it’s Manchester United, I know this, but Manchester United aren’t what they used to be. They might statistically be the biggest club in the world and in name, but they are not what they used to be.

“Why would you want to leave Real Madrid? The only reason why you’d want to leave is because someone’s said ‘here’s £300k a week, you’re 30 years old, here’s a four or five-year deal’.”

Foster later described it as a “mercenary” deal but admitted Casemiro will put the work in on the pitch. He added: “It screams a little bit of a mercenary, but Casemiro isn’t a mercenary, he’s a centre-mid who will work his socks off.”

Casemiro will not sign in time to play against rivals Liverpool on Monday. If a deal is completed in the coming days, he could make his debut away at Southampton next Saturday.
