Borussia Dortmund are closing in on RB Salzburg forward Karim Adeyemi in a move that will open the door for Erling Haaland’s departure this summer. And with his £64million release clause activating in the summer window, European heavyweights, including those in the Premier League, will be lining up for his signature.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Dortmund have been in talks with Salzburg to sign Adeyemi since November.

The Bundesliga giants are confident of agreeing a deal for his services in the coming weeks in preparation for when the summer window opens.

Adeyemi is Dortmund’s primary transfer target after signing a pre-contract agreement for Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule.

And the 20-year-old is also in advanced negotiations over his contract in his homeland Germany.

Adeyemi has been directly involved in 16 goals in 17 Austrian Bundesliga games this season, registering 14 goals and two assists.

He also scored three goals and provided one assist for Salzburg in the Champions League group stage, helping the club into the knockouts for the first time.

So there is undoubtedly confidence in his ability to replace Haaland, who looks all but certain to be heading for the Westfalenstadion exit door.

And the Norwegian superstar has been linked with several top European outfits in the build-up to the summer.

Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are suitors, but Haaland’s preference is Real Madrid.

But the LaLiga leaders are also linked with free transfers for Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba and PSG forward Kylian Mbappe.

And if there is no space on their wage bill for Haaland’s arrival, the Premier League could be his favoured alternative destination.

Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and United have all been in the frame for his signature at one stage amid his Dortmund exit saga.

If a move to Spain is off the cards this summer, there could be a heated battle between England’s top clubs to secure one of the coups of the transfer window.

Haaland has produced extraordinary numbers since leaving Salzburg for Dortmund, the same path Adeyemi is set to take.

The 21-year-old has registered 80 goals and 18 assists in all competitions in Germany and is on an upward trajectory to becoming one of the greatest strikers in football history.

And given he was born in Leeds, and return to the country will likely appeal, with Man City expected to be in pole position among Premier League suitors.
