Benfica could rescue Man United outcast Phil Jones in January window

Benfica could rescue Manchester United outcast Phil Jones from his Old Trafford nightmare with a surprise January loan bid… despite the injury-stricken defender failing to play a single minute in 23 MONTHS

  • Benfica is viewed as a potential landing spot for Phil Jones in January window
  • The Portuguese side are looking for a versatile defender on a short loan deal
  • Jones has not played for United’s first team since January 2020 at Tranmere
  • United would prefer a permanent exit but he has had no action in 23 months

Manchester United defender Phil Jones is a potential target for Benfica in January.

The 29-year-old is ready to leave United to play regular football after a number of frustrating seasons blighted by injuries.

Jones had worked his way back into contention for a place on the bench only to be hit again by the club’s Covid outbreak.

Interim boss Ralf Rangnick has already said he will look to reduce a bloated squad in January

Benfica are targeting a loan deal for a versatile defender in January and Jones could fit the bill

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick has already confirmed he is ready to let players leave next month as he believes United’s squad is too big and any offer from Benfica would be considered.

The Portuguese side, currently third in the Primeira Liga, are looking to bring in a versatile defender on loan and that could suit Jones as he looks to put himself in the shop window.

His last competitive game for United was when he scored in the 6-1 FA Cup victory over Tranmere in January 2020.

Since then he has battled to overcome a knee injury, a time he has described as ‘the lowest of his life’. He has since played in behind closed doors games and feels ready to prove his fitness again.

Jones is still under contract until 2023 and, while United may prefer a permanent sale, a loan is more realistic considering the time he has spent out of action.

Many of United’s players returned to training at staggered intervals on Tuesday ahead of Monday’s game with Newcastle United.

Anthony Martial is another player keen to leave in January. He has interest from Sevilla, Barcelona and Juventus though the latter two clubs would prefer initial loans which would likely be rebuffed by United.
