Signing Jude Bellingham next summer appears to be beyond the financial means of Liverpool in a major blow for Jurgen Klopp, according to reports. The Reds have done plenty of background work on the England midfielder and were expected to be strong contenders to complete a deal with Borussia Dortmund.

Liverpool want to rival the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United for Bellingham at the end of the season. Klopp is desperate to improve his midfield with the addition of fresh talent.

The 19-year-old starlet has emerged as one of Europe’s brightest prospects and is also wanted by Real Madrid and Barcelona. However, Madrid would need to sell one of their four non-EU players as they are already at the limit of their quota, while Barca’s financial crisis is well documented.

Bellingham is widely expected to return to England from Dortmund, having made the move to Germany from Birmingham in the summer of 2020. But Liverpool face being priced out of a transfer by their wealthy Premier League rivals.

That is according to the Daily Telegraph, who claim that Liverpool were only able to sign Darwin Nunez and renew Mohamed Salah’s contract last summer due to the sale of Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich. It would likely take another mega-money departure for Bellingham to end up at Anfield, but there are few expendable assets in the Reds’ squad who could command a huge fee.

There remains uncertainty at ownership level due to the club being put up for sale. Fenway Sports Group is trying to find a buyer which could disrupt future transfer plans.

It also comes amid news that sporting director Julian Ward is set to quit the Merseyside outfit, having only replaced Michael Edwards last summer. Director of research Ian Graham is working his notice after a decade of service.

Graham headed up Liverpool’s lauded data department which contributed so effectively to recruitment. That is another huge blow to the club’s future transfer plans.

Bellingham could be made available next summer, especially with a positive World Cup likely to drive up his price. Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has said that the Bundesliga club will meet with Bellingham and the teenager’s representatives to discuss his future following the tournament.

The Three Lions prospect has apparently been earmarked by Man City as a key target after Pep Guardiola committed the next three years to the reigning Premier League champions. Chelsea and Man Utd have also been strongly linked.

United came close to convincing Bellingham to move to Old Trafford before he decided to move to Germany two-and-a-half years ago.
